The History of the NPP of Ghana in SA
Individuals who supported the NPP came together on an informal basis in the Eastern Cape during 1999. Key members of the Group were Messrs Abankwa, Boateng, Baiden, Lartey and Ampabeng.
At the same time a small group in Johannesburg who also supported the NPP organised a fund raising activity for the 1999 elections. Key members of this group of supporters were Messrs Peprah, Osafo Gyimah, Kofi Sekyere, Aggrey Ntim and Yaw Annor.
Support for the Party in South Africa gathered strength when Nana Addo visited SA during 2007. A formal meeting was organised and hosted by Dr Douglas Boateng at the Dainfern Country Estates. Key organisers of the gathering included Prof Darkwa, Osafo Gyimah, Peprah, Dr. Yaw Annor, Kofi Sekyere and were attended by some 50 people.
A formal Chapter of the NPP Gautend was launched on 12 November 2011. The elected Executive comprised of Mr Enoch Peprah (Chairperson), Mr. Kweku Odame-Takyi (Vice-Chairperson), Professor Yaw Amoateng (Secretary), Mrs Charity Assan (Treasurer) and the Organiser, Mr Samuel Amoako.
Two additional sub-committees, (Disciplinary and Publications) have been constituted. Dr. John Kudjoe and Mr Kofi Antwi head the Disciplinary Committee while Mr. Rexford Antwi and Ms. Euphemia Annor have been nominated in absentia for the Publications Committee. Ms Euphemia Annor has also been elected as the Organiser in the place of Mr. Samuel Amoako due to the fact that Mr Amoako has left the University of Johannesburg for Ghana after completing his Master’s Degree in Political Science with distinction.
Fund raising efforts took place in order to support Nana Addo’s 2012 Presidential election bid. The Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, who is the Minority Leader in Parliament and his wife, the Hon. Ofosu Asamoah MP for Kade in the Eastern Region, paid a visit to Gauteng Chapter in the middle of 2012. The session was hosted by Mr Peprah at his residence and about 30 members attended the session.
An appeal for funds was launched during the visit of the honourable members of Parliament. By mid- October an amount of R 20 700 was raised. Of this amount, R 18 570 (equivalent to US$ 2 000) was donated to the mother party in Ghana during October 2012 in order to aid the campaign efforts for the elections of 2012.
Efforts to organise Chapters in various wards of Johannesburg have been spearheaded by Mr Kweku Odame-Takyi who has been ably supported by Kwabena Awuah and Asare.
A new Chapter Executive for Gauteng was elected on August 26 2015 and was chaired by Mr Kweku Odame Takyi. Prof Yaw Amoateng was elected to be the Vice-Chairperson together with Mrs Charity Assan as the Treasurer. Messrs Michael Adomako Baidoo and Theophilus Asare Addo were elected as the Secretary and Organiser respectively.
During November 2015, Nana Addo met with the executive of the Gauteng Chapter while on a private visit to South Africa. On 7 May 2016, the South African Branch of the NPP has been formally launched by Nana Akuffo Addo at the Wanderers club in Johannesburg. This inauguration will kickstart a fund-raising drive for the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana which will take place on 7 November 2016.
The support of members of the NPP who are residing in South Africa of the newly established Branch is appreciated. Together we will strengthen the Party and ensure that a new political era is heralded in Ghana. Unity is crucial and for that we thank you!
